2018-07-09 Issue 58 Fundamental Behavior 3 Protect The Environment
Summer is here! Time to go outside and enjoy the great outdoors! Whether your favorite outdoor activity is hiking in the mountains, swimming in the ocean or lake, or just relaxing outside , we all need and enjoy clean air, clean water, and clean natural areas in which to live, work and play. But, as we also know, these natural resources need protection if they are to remain clean and enjoyable.
We can all be proud that YKK is doing its part to protect our environment. YKK Corporation and its subsidiaries globally have long been leaders in recognizing the importance of protecting the environment and finding new ways to produce our products with less waste and less adverse impact on the environment.
YKK Corporation, our parent company in Japan, has been an international corporate leader in protecting the environment. Tadahiro Yoshida, YKK Corporation’s Chairman and CEO, established a YKK Group Environmental Pledge in 1994, long before it became popular or “cool” for companies to promote their environmental awareness. That Pledge is as follows:
YKK Group Environmental Pledge
It is recognized today as being a most important duty for all humankind that we preserve the abundantly endowed global environment and that we transfer it to the next generation in a sound condition. The YKK Group proclaims that it will address and promote “harmony with the environment” as the highest priority of its business activities.
YKK Corporation also publishes news of its global environmental activities and developments on the YKK global website at http://www.ykk.com/english/corporate/csr/index.html and on the Fastening website at https://www.ykkfastening.com/sustainability/.
In the NCA Region, we have an NCA Environmental Compliance Committee (ECC) that was established in 2009 to bring together managers at our manufacturing facilities to discuss environmental regulatory requirements and share best practices. The ECC is comprised primarily of the environmental managers at each of our manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Canada and Latin America. The ECC meets quarterly, and continuously looks for new ways to ensure that employees at our facilities are aware of applicable environmental regulatory requirements, so that our facilities can always remain in compliance and protect the environment. Visit http://ykknorthamerica.com/the-ykk-difference/corporate-social-responsibility/environmentally-friendly-manufacturing/ to watch a video in which YKK Corporation of America’s President, Jim Reed, discusses YKK’s efforts to reduce our environmental impact.
We as individuals can also take steps to protect the environment. I hope you will take a few minutes this summer to find new ways to reuse, recycle, and otherwise protect our environment so we can all continue to enjoy being outdoors!
