2020-03-02 Issue 136 – Fundamental Behavior 9 – Honor commitments
Okay, let’s be honest. Not all commitments are fun. Have you ever committed to something, only to find out it turns out differently than you thought and has you thinking, “What have I gotten myself into?” It’s in these situations where honoring a commitment can be difficult.
Those who know my husband knows he will do anything for anybody (sometimes to a fault). A few months ago, he volunteered himself and our son to help some neighbors who were moving over the Thanksgiving holiday. Now I don’t know about you, but in my book moving fits in the category of “not fun.” It’s not fun to move your own stuff, let alone someone else’s. But my husband felt like it was the right thing to do and he had a few free days to help out before the holiday.
Unfortunately, what started as a simple “We’ll help you pack the truck” quickly went off track. The neighbor’s plans kept changing and Thanksgiving came and went. Unfortunately so did those few free days and some of the neighbors who were going to help.
A couple of weekends later they were ready to move, but the person who was going to drive the truck couldn’t make it. They really needed his help. So my husband and son loaded the truck and made a hectic 24 hour trek from Georgia to Florida and back. Even though this had become an imposition and meant a change to some family plans, he stuck to his commitment to help them and followed through. I knew he would. And actually, this “opportunity” showed our son, who really didn’t want to spend his week that way, a commitment may not turn out how you thought it would, but you honor it. I love these guys!
I think in situations like this, honoring your commitment says a lot about you as a person. One thing it says is “you can count on me,” and that says a lot. And it’s not like we help our neighbors move every day, but all the little commitments we honor add up too. Be the person others know they can rely on because honoring commitments is a direct reflection on you, and you could be setting an example for others.
