Demonstrate an unwavering commitment to doing the right thing in every action you take and in every decision you make, especially when no one’s looking. Always tell the truth, no matter the consequences.

As I sit here writing this, trying to meet the inspiring-quote quota, I begin to think about the significance of this phrase. A phrase that seems overwhelmingly intimidating, especially when our reality involves the majority of the populace operating in the gray area of right/ wrong… but the ‘norm’ is the frequency where things sustain and in many cases stagnate. Therein lies the beauty of such a simple principle! Reelin’ the cynic back in, to me the phrase is a fundamental of existence that bleeds through all aspects of life, is a catalyst for growth, and is the most rewarding (life-lesson, pride, karmic or even monetary). “Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.” – Saint Augustine.

Doing the right thing attracts many opportunities for personal development and, like most things, incrementally. Things like holding onto trash to be disposed of properly later, owning a mistake/ fault, even a greeting. To some, these examples are uncomfortable, painful, or even insignificant. To me, these are instances of acknowledgement. Not littering allows for me to take the environment into account and leave a place the same or better than I found it, owning up to an error acknowledges my own humanity and ‘rip-the-Band-Aid-off’ in terms of the personal growth needed to strive and a moment to practice self-reflection, and greeting someone is simply acknowledging their existence! The world is ever-expanding, why not my own consciousness? “What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

These are tiny gestures I’ll admit (and maybe I’ve attached too deep of a meaning for them) but this principle instilled into daily routine has a compounding effect and surely is a recipe for a full and successful life. Although I don’t consider myself successful (super subjective!!!) yet, I do owe many of my fondest memories and experiences throughout my life’s journey to this trait. One thing is for certain – in terms of doing what’s right, I know the operative word is “doing”. Most times the instances are uneventful and other times lead to a great story. Make no mistake, temporary discomfort may be included… action must be taken to move forward! DOING what’s right is the only fundamental behavior; the rest of the list is the breakdown of it! “Well-done is better than well-said” -Benjamin Franklin. “Knowing what’s right doesn’t mean much unless you do what’s right.”- Theodore Roosevelt
