I am very honored to be asked to talk about this important Fundamental Behavior, “Take Ownership,” as it is very near and dear to my heart. As a young manager within YKK many years ago, we learned this Fundamental Behavior very early in our careers because it was taught to us by our experienced and wise leaders.
But what exactly does “Take Ownership” mean? Accept responsibility? Yes. Be accountable? Of course. However, “Take Ownership” means so much more. Simply put, “Take Ownership” means that the various tasks and work we do, job responsibilities, and decisions we make each day belong to each of us. It is our stewardship within the company. And once we accept ownership, it is always followed by trust from your boss and fellow employees.
For me, this is one of the highest forms of motivation and a key concept in effective management of ourselves and others and in development of the leadership skills required by YKK.
Tadao Yoshida, YKK’s founder, explained the “Take Ownership” Fundamental Behavior very clearly so many years ago: “It is important to work diligently but what is essential is to work with the spirit of Self Employment, working in compliance, making judgments and decisions on our own responsibility.”
